Last year, the media reported that Amsterdam has become hugely popular among expats. Then it appeared that many international firms had trouble placing personnel in Amsterdam. This was due to the expensive living accommodations and the scarcity of good schools.
Amsterdam drops down on most-expensive list
One year later, Amsterdam has dropped down on the most expensive cities in the world list for expats. Amsterdam has, in fact, dropped down considerably. Last year it was ranked 64th and this year it finishes in 85th place. It has remained in 12th position of Europe's most expensive cities.
Annual list of most expensive expat cities
Every year, Mercer publishes a list of the most expensive cities in the world for expats. The cities are ranked according to their total costs which include food, entertainment and rental prices. What is striking is that many European cities have dropped in the rankings because of the strong dollar. Companies that work with dollars can therefore save money by placing their personnel in European countries.
The most expensive city in the world for expats is currently Luanda, the capital of Angola. Hong Kong finished 2nd and Tokyo is ranked 3rd.
